A Christchurch showroom displays some of the world’s finest fabrics – despite being in the midst of the rubble. David Killick reports.

Face it, Christchurch is a mess: empty buildings, empty sites, and piles of rubble.

What a revelation, then, to come across a building that is not only standing but contains a thriving, energetic, and futurefocused business. Mainland
Design Centre, in Welles St just off Colombo on the southern side of the city, is a hub for interior designers. It’s a showroom, not a retail store, but
the public is welcome to come and browse.
